Open source software lives as long as there is sufficient interest.

Proprietary software may live on as long as there is profit - though even if there's profit the project might be killed off.

You'd expect that to give open source a clear advantage, though given our short attention span in tech this is not always the case... at least open source projects can be revived or scavenged for parts, though!
